Program Overview

Central to the SIG–Residential program is the idea that by living where they learn, students become part of a community of like-minded young people and adults. These students are committed to academic excellence, social and emotional growth, and creative and recreational excitement. Crucial to this stimulating environment is the inclusion of students who share similar abilities, interests, commitments, and talents. Here students learn responsibility, self-motivation, community participation, and respect for others.

Every student is scheduled for five academic periods during each of the 15 academic days. Students select from nearly 70 academic, arts and recreational courses. In addition, we offer enrichment activities and performances. Each seventy-five minute class meets five times a week, and there is a supervised tutorial study session each evening.

The academic program is key to the spirit and structure of SIG. Although the program is held at different locations, the sessions at each site are virtually identical in philosophy, purpose and structure. Students are expected to perform at the upper level of their capabilities. Assessments and out-of-class assignments are given. Complete library and research facilities are available for student use at each campus. A final student performance report is sent to each student’s home in early fall.

A variety of arts courses are available. These courses are designed to introduce students to new areas of interest and to provide meaningful learning experiences. Recreational courses, taught by qualified instructors, provide an opportunity to accept the challenge of learning new skills or pursuing some old favorites.

On weekends, students participate in a variety of activities (off-campus trips on Saturdays, Sunday Creativity Day, and extended evening programs) that provide a change of pace and further enrichment specifically designed for the academically gifted student.
